Adult and Youth Choirs Bring the Music to Life at Christ Church.
The music program at Christ Church is amazing! Led by Houfei Yang, Adult Choir sings at the 10:30 Sunday morning services. The men and women who sing in the choir have some of the most beautiful voices you can imagine. They also sing on Ash Wednesday and during services of Christmas and Holy Week. Many members of the choir also sing solos and in small ensembles, bringing variety to our musical worship. We also welcome the talents of musicians from institutions like the Peabody conservatory to add a special touch to our Christmas and Easter services.
The Youth Choir sings regularly at the Sunday morning services during the academic year. They also sing at the 4:00 Christmas Eve service. They have been truly delightful to work with.
There are many talented musicians in our congregation. Al Bracey, Shannon Pruitt and JB Hanson graciously led the outside service on guitar. Abigail Bettencourt brought us her beautiful offering at the harp. Amanda Kirkpatrick assisted both choirs on occasions as a flutist and offered a sweet flute solo on Christmas eve.
As the new music director of the Christ church in September 2008 I inherited quite a massive music library. As I was trying to find my way in cabinets and drawers of music, I felt that this library badly needed cataloging. Many thanks to Sara Kirkpatrick and Erica Palmisano, through their diligent work, over 400 songs have been cataloged digitally. We are in the process of reorganizing the library. It’s quite a project, but when we finally get through with it, future music directors will inherit a well mapped maze.
Ann Barnes and Shannon Pruitt still lead Sunday School music each week for classes Pre-K through second grade.
When I came to Christ church, I was very impressed by the diverse congregation. I would like to take this opportunity to invite more people to get involved in the musical worship, be it joining one of the choirs, be it offering an instrumental solo or ensemble, or introduce a worshiping song from your country. There are indeed many wonderful opportunities, so let us “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” at Christ Episcopal Church!
