Meditation : Whose Child Am I?

I walk in the darkness and yearn to see light.  I step outside and the bright sunlight stings my eyes; I shield them from its intensity.  Interesting how this physical behavior mirrors our spiritual hunger.  We hunger for truth and justice, but when bathed in it we seek the pleasures and things of the world trying to attain comfort and happiness, but often find are corrupting and lead away from truth and justice.  How interesting.

I am created in the image of God endowed with complete freedom to choose, so how do I choose?  Of course we all want to say that, “I choose to follow His path.”  But do we really?  Do we really believe that God loves and cares for us so deeply that he knows the very number of hairs on our head?  If not, then we have lessened the Infinite, and diminished the depth, value, and understanding of that love poured upon us all whether righteous or grievous sinner or even the eternally damned.  Can one even contemplate such a love?  It surely exceeds my capacity.

Matthew wrote truthfully when he said, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”  So which do you choose?  I suppose we all try to fool ourselves and try to walk the fence to serve both.  “Look out for number one,” we often say… and do.  Is that serving Christ?  We all know the answer.  On the surface and way deep down we all know the path of service to which Christ calls us.  It leads to Calgary, the outskirts of the world’s discards and often death within the world… but life eternal with and in Him.  We all want that latter joyous part, but fear walking the path of pain, suffering, and selflessness to get there.  Yet He showed us the way and sent His Spirit to help us along that path.  That Spirit is the infinite Love of our Savior, and assures us that He is there every step along the way.  That Spirit whispers to us that there is always death at the end of the road in the world, but that there is eternal life with Him.

We must choose.  Each and every day we are making choices.  There are always choices, even the choice to not choose is a free choice.  So are you going to make your choices to serve Him or the world?  Remember, a choice for “yourself” is really a cover to shield your eyes from the Light.  You are ALWAYS choosing to serve one master or the other.

I am created by God in God’s image.  Through faith in the Spirit, I know He will shield and protect me and wipe away all my fears to do whatever is needed even unto death.  In that faith I pray each day, “His will be done!” I believe that if God is for me, nothing stands in my way for I am seeking the path of His will.  So whose child am I?  I choose to be a child of the Light and echo Paul’s words:

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
